The global recession did not impact the amusement parks this summer – a fact that can be concluded from the figures reported by Parks & Resorts Scandinavia for the 2009 season. Attendance rates rose by 23% at Gröna Lund's Tivoli, by 16% at Kolmården's Zoo, by 21% at Skara Sommarland and by 9% at the Aquaria Water Museum. Having attracted a staggering 2.5 million visitors, the summer season for Parks & Resorts' parks can be pronounced virtually unbeatable.
"In the spring, we were pretty uncertain as to how the recession would hit the parks, even with the knowledge that amusement parks have fared well during recessions in the past. With a regular spring season and a fantastic July and August behind us, we held our breath for the fall – but never in our wildest dreams did any of us imagine that the season would end on such a high note," says Jan Roy, CEO of Parks & Resorts Scandinavia.

The attendance rates for summer 2009 point upward at every theme park operated by Parks & Resorts Scandinavia (PRS): Aquaria Water Museum, Gröna Lund’s Tivoli, Kolmården’s Zoo and Skara Sommarland. If the number of visitors remains high this autumn, 2009 is expected to be a record year.
“It is absolutely incredible that so many people have chosen to visit our theme parks this summer. There was, of course, a lot of speculation this spring about whether Swedes would stay at home or travel abroad for their holidays this year, and the total number of visitors to our parks so far adds up to over 600,000 in July alone – which is an 11% increase compared with last year,” says Jan Roy, Acting CEO for Parks & Resorts Scandinavia.

Gröna Lund wants to convert the land into yet another area of the park to house two huge new attractions – Scandinavia’s most spine-tingling roller coaster and one of Europe’s highest rides!
After several years of planning and deliberations, Gröna Lund today submitted an application for planning permission to develop Skeppsholmsviken, the area that currently serves as Gröna Lund’s car park. In addition to being an entirely new park area offering food and game stalls, this new area is also designed to house Scandinavia’s most spine-tingling roller coaster and one of Europe’s highest chair-o-planes! It will be another step forward towards fulfilling Gröna Lund’s vision – to offer world-class all-embracing experiences.

It’s higher than the Jetline roller coaster, pulls more G-force than the Fritt Fall drop tower and is as loopy as Extreme. When Gröna Lund throws open its gates on April 25, a sparkling new and unique roller coaster will be ready and waiting for only the boldest of visitors over 140 cm. Gröna Lund’s new ride for 2009 is exactly what its name implies: Insane.
